Wookey Hole Caves

Wookey Hole Show Caves

Wookey Hole is a show cave and tourist attraction in the village of Wookey Hole. The cave is renowned for the Witch of Wookey Hole – a roughly human shaped rock outcrop, reputedly turned to stone by a young monk from Glastonbury, whose love affair had been ruined by the spells of the witch.

In the early 20th century the skeleton of a woman with a dagger were found ten feet deep in the cave. Near to that discovery was the skeleton of a goat. Indications of some sacred right or that of sacrifice?

It was possibly due to the legend of the witch that encouraged the Most Haunted team to visit Wookey Hole Caves and Mill to film an episode there. The episode aired on 10th March 2009 and was the last episode in series eleven.

Visitor Information

Wookey Hole is a village close to Wells in Somerset, England.

It is within the parish of St Cuthbert Out. One possible origin for the name Wookey is from the Old English wocig (an animal trap), although it is also a possible alteration from a Celtic word ogo (cave) referring to Wookey Hole Caves.
